Pyhämaa
is located in South-West part of Finland
(”Varsinais-Suomi”, The True Finland) on the shore
of Pohjanlahti gulf, which is
part of the Baltic Sea. It consists of some
250 islands and cliffs. There are 640 inhabitants. Pyhämaa is rich in
culture, history and nature: few villages in Finland do possess two
churches, a splendid archipelago and beautiful scenery.
There
are many mystical stories in Pyhämaa. They tell us about the eviction of
bad spirits from Pyhämaa, of the crusades of Bishop Henrik who also
visited Pyhämaa and of pirates and their raids.
Pyhämaa
has excellent maritime connections to all directions. For long the sea
routes were the only option to travel from Pyhämaa and to Pyhämaa. Only
as late as in 1891 a bridge was constructed over Katarauma sound. Later
another bridge as built over another sound to connect Pyhämaa main island
to Edväinen, Kursila and Lyökki villages (which are also parts of Pyhämaa).
As
road connections to Pyhämaa didn’t earlier exist, only the inhabitants
accociated with maritime trade met frequently people in other villages
and towns. The following saying from Pyhämaa dates from those days:
I do feel so strange when I’m amongst other
people (and I yearn for home).
We welcome you to Pyhämaa!
Come by boat or by car – you will enjoy our idyllic village and the
surrounding nature and sea!
